No Updates?

I haven’t had internet for awhile now and my external hard drive which contained a lot of my work died. However, I’m recovering a lot of things (through things backed up online etc), and I will eventually have the internet. I have been working on things too. I made a very interesting infomercial-esque video for my brother’s speech class (he gave me the footage to edit, little did he know I had a free night and would put my own touches to his video) which is quite comical and entertaining. I have also been working on writing ideas for some short and not so short films I would like to do. Film making, from the writing to the creation is looking more and more like a direction I would like to pursue more. I have also worked on some video animations that are coming out quite interestingly. So, once I get internet back, I would expect some more updates. Look out for more content here, because I have decided to become entertaining. I would like to not just have content that might be interesting to see that I’ve done, but I would like to create more content that will seriously entertain the viewer. That is always a goal, but I am really focusing on creating things that will seriously entertain people.

SnoNoSnoFreddysign Video

I made this video for a bit of an ad for this site and myself. The video is of me mountainboarding at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. For those unfamiliar with mountainboarding, it is much like snowboarding, but the rider rides on tires instead of sliding. This allows for a very broad range of riding location and seasons. The idea was to sort of block the view of the mountainboard during the first part of the clip, with showing the ground as white (like snow). Then, when I hit the ground I turned the colors back to the original grass, and then eventually unhid the board. What a twist!

Blackburn College Dorm Flags

I was recommended to the Blackburn Provost for a flag design job that would have a fast deadline. Each dorm on campus created a design for a flag for their dorm using poster board and markers. The day before finals, each dorm presented their designs at a dinner, and they gave a small presentation explaining their flag designs. After the designs were submitted, my job was to take the posters, and do some necessary redesigns and vectorize the images so they could be sent to the flag company to make actual flags. The vector images were supposed to be sent out before students left for winter break after finals to ensure that the flags would be ready when students returned. So, I had a relatively quick deadline (4 days) considering I had finals, and on of the original designs had some possible copyright problems, and it had to be redesigned by the dorm. I got everything done ahead of time though, and everything went smoothly. It went smoothly enough that the provost employed me once again, the next semester, to do another similar project for flags that the freshmen class made.

Also, I collaborated with the original design of the Jewell dorm flag. I came up with an idea of creating a large “J” made up of smaller words that describe some unique qualities of the dorm. It was a good experience of collaboration between myself and other dorm members. Our flag design and presentation ended up winning the first prize in the contest.

The flags were used as part of a program that involved each dorm competing against each other each month in various things including attendance to events, intramurals and honor workers. The winning dorm’s flag was displayed in the top middle position in one of the main buildings on campus, and the winning dorm would keep a travelling wooden beaver trophy. Not to toot our own horns but… BEEP BEEP. Jewell, my dorm, never lost.

Jewell Slip ‘n Slide Dorm Event Poster

Using the Jewell J that was created for the Jewell flag, I made this poster for the dorm’s event, slip ‘n slide. It was a simple, design, but stood out compared to the non-designed posters littered throughout the campus.

Alice In Wonderland page redesign

I took a page from
    Alice in Wonderland

and created 20 variations. They vary in extremeness. I made a combination of conservative page designs and experimental page designs. I created multiple illustrations for the page as well.

Video Reel Intro

I added a video reel to my portfolio showcasing clips of my video work. I think it was appropriate to make a nice intro to this video. I did. The process of making this video was made very difficult by technical difficulties inside of After Effects. Something kept making the program crash, and I had to figure out what it was, why it was doing it, and then figure out a new way of doing things. I also used the video to create a new header for this site.

I have been thinking, and I think I am going to change my logo to just being the “Freddy” sign, rather than being the “Freddy” sign on top of a head. I think this new way of doing this will make my logo simpler. It may also make it less weird to some people.

The original idea with the sign in the head involved having ideas turned into designs. Anyways, enough with this for now. I’m sure there will be more to add to the saga of the logo change in the future.

Just watch the intro, go to the portfolio and watch the video reel, look at my header, and also, I added a new favicon to this site, so look at the top of your browser!

Allegory of the Cave

Allegory of the Cave

The Allegory of the Cave from Plato’s Republic seemed to be an especially still relevant work. I decided to take the story and hint at the modern context by the use of images and modern newspaper styling. Basically, the story is about some people who were chained up in a cave their entire lives, only seeing the shadows on the wall that were created by the keepers, etc walking in front of the light. The story supposes that one of them gets set free, and the new reality he sees seems unreal compared to what he had been conditioned to. Overall, the story’s theme revolves around what is perceived and what is real. I saw a parallel with this, and current media. The various media outlets have this power of creating perceptions for the public. I connected media as the keepers who show us the shadows, but may not necessarily show true reality. The first image reflects that. The second image displays someone looking at alternatives to mainstream news and doing more personal research. The light blinds the person looking at the screen as the light blinded the people in the caves. Sometimes the truth can be less comfortable and enjoyable. I think the allegory is a very interesting read, and I like the connection that I have created in this design.

Project Love-a-bull Video

Project Love-a-bull video from Trent Fred on Vimeo.

I made the logo for Project Love-a-bull as seen in my previous post. On my own initiative, I went ahead and made a quick animation involving the logo dog. Enjoy.

Current Events

I am working on a logo for Project Love-a-Bull. It is coming along pretty well. I will upload the logo, etc. when it is finalized. I am working on figuring out how I will do pricing, etc, and I will be adding a freelance request section.  I would really like to specialize on doing some commercials for local businesses.  I feel like I can create commercials that would rival national level commercials for local businesses for a fraction of the cost they would have to pay otherwise.  During my downtime, I have been brainstorming ideas for commercials for specific local businesses and causes. The process has been coming rather naturally, and I think I will be able to do well once I find some clients.  The next step is finding those clients.  Once everything is set up, I think I am going to work on advertising myself.

I also had a dream I drowned this morning.
